The Defiant Encore 0028 was manufactured from 7/11/1989 through 4/25/1990 and has a Geisser testing label.
The Defiant Encore 2140 was manufactured from 5/17/1990 through 11/05/1991 and has a Warnock Hersey testing lab label. Catalyst access is in the back of the stove and a double pane of glass in each door.

Named for a 19th-century steamship, the original Vermont Castings Defiant Wood Stove came to epitomize America’s resolve and independence during the Energy Crisis of the 1970s. The year was 1975. With energy prices going through the roof, and not an attractive or efficient wood stove to be found anywhere, two entrepreneurs set out to create a stove that was a thing of beauty as well as utility. Finely crafted from cast iron, the Defiant was the first wood stove to combine an artistically designed exterior with a methodically engineered interior, using new technologies for efficient combustion.

The Defiant 1945 was in production from March of 2002 through 2013 and removed the attached legs of the Defiant 1910 and provided a reversible flue collar. The model designate changed from 1910 to 1945. Other changes included:
- Switched to thicker gasket on the air plates to prevent thermostat pinching 3/12/2002
- Changed door glass gasket from Fibrefax one piece gasket to rope style 9/26/2002
- Modified doors for better fit and sealing 11/11/2002
- Changed to larger diameter gasket around flue collar 5/6/2003
- Replace Nickel handles with Brushed Nickel and Black fallaway handle 5/12/2006
- Replace Black Ceramic handle with wooden handle 08/06/2007
- Start shipping Defiants with legs attached 7/10/2008
